Dear Dr. Winder:
Q. Recently I read about someone having rhinoplasty to reshape their nose, and he got a chin implant at the same time. I have a very weak jaw line; is it normal to combine the two procedures?
A. The chin/nose surgery combination is the most common duo of cosmetic
procedures performed simultaneously. The reason these procedures are done together is that the shape of the nose and chin have such a direct relation to each other. When a patient has a weak chin, adding a chin implant will give an overall better effect to the rhinoplasty results.
Chin implants can also be extremely effective when used alone, when no correction
needs to be made to the nose. And, many times, a nose that looks "too large" will
look "just right" when the chin implant brings the two into balance.
