UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY

If you're considering upper blepharoplasty....

Upper eyelid surgery, technically known as upper blepharoplasty, is a surgical technique to help correct the puffiness and droopy skin of the upper eyelid; these are features that make us look older and more tired than we are.

The best candidates for blepharoplasty are men and women who are healthy and have realistic expectations of what this surgery can achieve. Some patients elect to have this surgery in their late 20's or early 30's because droopy, baggy eyelids run in their families. When performed by a qualified board certified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. However, there are certain conditions that can increase risk with blepharoplasty surgery - thyroid problems such as hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease, dry eye or lack of sufficient tears, high blood pressure or other circulatory disorders, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. A detached retina or glaucoma is also reason for caution; discuss these conditions with Dr. Winder while deciding whether or not to have this surgery.

Before the surgery...

You'll meet with Dr. Winder and his patient counselor who'll go over all the information and details you will need to know to make a fully informed and educated decision about this surgery (including looking at "before & after" pictures of other patients). Approximately one week prior to surgery, you'll have your pre-op appointment in the Durango office; one of our nurses, and Dr. Winder, will do a complete physical and history, and, if needed, we will send you for pre-op testing.

The surgery...

The surgery can be performed under local anesthesia or with some sedation if you prefer, in our SurgiCenter with no overnight stay, complete confidentiality, and with considerable cost savings vs. hospitalization. The incision is placed in the natural crease of your upper eyelid.

After the surgery...

The incisions will be covered with steri-strips for one week. The upper eyelid will be slightly swollen and bruised, but discomfort is usually minimal and easily controlled with medication. Stitches will be removed in one week; some patients return to work as early as the next day.
