BREAST AUGMENTATION

If you're considering breast augmentation....

Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts for a number of reasons:

  • to balance a difference in breast size (asymmetry);
  • to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy;
  • to enhance the body contour of a woman, who, for personal reasons, feels her breasts are too small.
For many women the result of breast augmentation can be very satisfying, even exhilarating, as they learn to appreciate their fuller appearance. Your decision to have breast augmentation is a highly personal one that not everyone will understand; the important thing is how you feel about it.

Before the surgery...

You'll meet with Dr. Winder and his patient counselor who'll go over all the information and details you will need to know to make a fully informed and educated decision about this surgery (including looking at "before & after" pictures of other patients). Approximately one week prior to surgery you will have your pre-op appointment in the Durango office; one of our nurses and Dr. Winder will do a complete physical and history, and, we will send you for pre-op testing.

The surgery...

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia in our SurgiCenter in Durango with no overnight stay, complete confidentiality, and with considerable cost savings vs. hospitalization. The incisions can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest (the inframammary fold) or around the lower border of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). The surgery takes about two hours to complete.

After the surgery...

Because of the anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home. A snug elastic bra must be worn for a few weeks. You are likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery, but you will be up and around in about 24 hours. Most of your pain will be controllable with medication. You should be able to return to work within a few days, depending on the level of activity required for your job.
