CHEMICAL PEEL

If you're considering a chemical peel....

A chemical peel can work wonders for wrinkled, blemished, sun-damaged and unevenly pigmented skin. Different acids (Glycolic acid, Phenol acid and Tricholoroacetic acid-TCA) cause new cell growth in the upper layers of the skin, resulting in smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin. The stronger the acid, the more dramatic the result. The strongest, most dramatic result is accomplished by using Phenol, followed by TCA and then Glycolic acid. Phenol actually bleaches the skin because it is absorbed more deeply than the others, but also carries a longer, more intense recovery period. TCA causes less pigmentary changes, has an easier, shorter recovery and can be repeated more often. A Glycolic acid peel (we use Bio-Medic's "micro-peel") has no down time at all; you can reapply your make-up and continue on with your day.

Pigmentary changes can occur with both Phenol and TCA; the darker the skin, the higher the potential for these changes to occur. The best patients for chemical peeling are patients who are light complected, are healthy and have realistic expectations of what can be accomplished; a patient should seek "improvement" not "perfection".

Before the procedure...

committed to quality cosmetic surgery services You'll meet with Dr. Winder and his patient counselor to go over all the information and details you will need to know to make a fully informed and educated decision about this surgery (including looking at "before & after" pictures of other patients). Approximately one week prior to surgery you will have your pre-op appointment in the Durango office; one of our nurses and Dr. Winder will do a complete physical and history, and, if needed, we will send you for pre-op laboratory tests.

The procedure...

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, if we're treating a small area of the face; when doing the whole face, you may be sedated. Regardless, it will be performed in our SurgiCenter in Durango with no overnight stay and complete confidentiality.

After the procedure...

The recovery from a chemical peel can be a trying experience; with a phenol peel, you'll be healed enough to cover the residual redness with make-up usually at about two to three weeks; with TCA, about one week to ten days; with a Bio-Medic "micro-peel" you can put your make-up on later that day and return to your normal routine. The redness will lessen gradually, but can take as long as three to six months before you'll return to a shade close to your normal skin tone.
