DERMABRASIONIf you're considering dermabrasion....
|
Dermabrasion is a controlled "sanding" of the top layers of skin for the purposes of "refinishing" the skin. This mode of treatment is used to soften the sharp edges of acne scars, or scars caused by accidents or previous surgery, and to smooth fine wrinkles, especially in the perioral area (around the lips), and also as a means of eliminating an unwanted tattoo. "Skin refinishing" can also be done with laser. When done by the dermabrasion method, a hand-held, high speed rotary wheel is used to remove the top layer of the skin. The best candidates for this procedure are light complected patients who are healthy and have realistic expectations of what this type of treatment can accomplish. Darker complected patients may experience change in pigmentation of the skin, either lighter or darker in the area(s) dermabraded. People who have active acne or who get frequent fever blisters or cold sores (herpes) may not be treatable until these conditions are cleared up as the risk of infection is greater. It is not uncommon, however, for a patient to experience an outbreak of tiny blemishes after dermabrasion, but these will clear up relatively quickly.

| The surgery... | ||
|
The surgery is performed under local anesthetic, and you may be sedated if you wish, in our SurgiCenter in Durango with no overnight stay, complete confidentiality, and with considerable cost savings vs. hospitalization. The surgery will take anywhere from one to two hours depending upon the area being treated.

An adherent dressing is placed on the area treated and peels off on its own within a few days. The treated areas will be painful, much like a "scrape" wound, but you'll be given medication to help with the pain. It's very important to stay out of the sun for the first several weeks, and to always protect your skin with sun block after dermabrasion. Healing takes place within the first 2-3 weeks.
