HAIR REPLACEMENT

If you're considering hair transplants....

Loss of hair is usually caused by hormonal changes, heredity and aging. When hair loss is caused by trauma or burns, it may be covered by your insurance. If you have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of your head to serve as donor areas, and have unsuccesssfully tried hair pieces and topical treatments, then you may want to consider the different types of hair replacement techniques. Hair transplanting can be done with punch grafts of 10-15 hairs each, mini grafts of 2-4 hairs each, micro-grafts of 1-2 hairs each, slit grafts of 4-10 hairs each and strip grafts of 30-40 hairs each. The number of plugs transplanted in the first surgical setting is usually about 50, but as many as 700 for mini and micro-grafts. These procedures can encompass as long as two years before you can see the final result. Flap surgery is accomplished by cutting out a section of bald scalp and a flap of hair-bearing skin is lifted off the surface while still attached and sewn into place - one flap can accomplish the work of 350 or more punch grafts. Scalp reduction can be considered for patients who want to cover areas at the top and back of the head. A segment of bald scalp is removed and the surrounding hair-bearing scalp is loosened and pulled together and closed with stitches.

The best candidates for hair replacement surgery are those who are healthy, have realistic expectations of what this surgery can accomplish, and are patient, as this is tedious surgery that can take several sessions to complete.

Before the surgery...

committed to quality cosmetic surgery services You'll meet with Dr. Winder and his patient counselor to go over all the information and details you will need to know to make a fully informed and educated decision about this surgery (including looking at "before & after" pictures of other patients). Approximately one week prior to surgery you will have your pre-op appointment in the Durango office; one of our nurses and Dr. Winder will do a complete physical and history, and, if needed, we will send you for pre-op laboratory tests.

The surgery...

The surgery is performed under local anesthetic, or local with supplemental IV sedation, in our SurgiCenter in Durango with no overnight stay, complete confidentiality, and with considerable cost savings vs. hospitalization. The surgery, depending upon the surgical approach, can take anywhere from one to three hours per stage.

After the surgery...

A compression bandage is placed upon the head immediately after surgery and, usualy, removed the following day. The area of your head that was grafted may ache, throb and feel "tight"; however, this is easily controlled with medication. How soon you resume your normal routine depends upon alot of factors; you may feel well enough to go back to work within a few days.
