OTOPLASTYIf you're considering otoplasty....
Otoplasty can "pin" ears and reduce their protrusion, and/or reduce the overall size of the ears. Most patients, young and old alike, are thrilled with the results of ear surgery. If you are considering otoplasty for your child, bear in mind that the desire for this change should come directly from the child, and not be the idea and desire of the parents. Ears have usually reached their adult size by the age of four or five; therefore, it is usually recommended, if a child has expressed an interest in doing something like this, that they have the surgery before kindergarten in order to avoid unnecessary and sometimes cruel treatment by their peers. Another consideration, for both children and adults, is the necessity to wear a "head-band" over the ears continually for six weeks, day and night. After that, it only needs to be worn at night for an additional period of six months. The best candidates for otoplasty are those who are healthy and have realistic expectations. It should not be expected that both ears will be "identical" after surgery, because, chances are, both ears were not identical before surgery. If you've discussed this surgery and your expectations with the plastic surgeon before the operation, chances are you will be quite pleased with the result!
| Before the surgery... | ||
You'll meet with Dr. Winder and his patient counselor to go over all the information and details you will need to know to make a fully informed and educated decision about this surgery (including looking at "before & after" pictures of other patients). Approximately one week prior to surgery you will have your pre-op appointment in the Durango office; one of our nurses and Dr. Winder will do a complete physical and history, and, if needed, we will send you for pre-op laboratory tests.
| The surgery... | ||
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia with supplemental IV sedation for older children and adults, and under general anesthesia for small children, in our SurgiCenter in Durango with no overnight stay, complete confidentiality, and with considerable cost savings vs. hospitalization. The scars from otoplasty are usually on the back of the ears and hidden from view. The surgery can take anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the extent of surgical correction.
| After the surgery... | ||
Your ears will be slightly swollen, and possibly bruised, but discomfort is usually minimal and easily controlled with medication. Stitches will be removed in one week, or dissolve. Some patients return to work as early as a day or two after surgery. Read our most Frequently asked Questions about Otoplasty.
