REDUCTION MAMMOPLASTYIf you're considering breast reduction....
|
Back and neck pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities, and breathing problems can be caused by large, pendulous breasts. Women, and teen-aged girls, can be very uncomfortable, both physically and emotionally, with excessively large breasts. Reduction mammoplasty, more commonly called breast reduction, can make a world of difference! The surgery is designed to remove fat, skin, and glandular tissue in order to create smaller breasts that are not as heavy. The surgery can also reduce the size of the areola (the pigmented circle of skin around the nipple). The surgical fees are usually thought to be a small price to pay for the outcome by women who have had the surgery. The best candidates for this surgery are those who are physically healthy and have an understanding of what to expect. The surgery does leave permanent scars, can result in slightly mismatched breasts and/or nipples, and it is not recommended for women who are planning on having a family and breast-feeding their babies. However, most women decide that the advantages outweigh the possible disadvantages and are extremely pleased with the results.

You'll meet with Dr. Winder and his patient counselor to go over all the information and details you will need to know to make a fully informed and educated decision about this surgery (including looking at "before & after" pictures of other patients). Approximately one week prior to surgery you will have your pre-op appointment in the Durango office; one of our nurses and Dr. Winder will do a complete physical and history, and we will send you for pre-op laboratory tests and a mammogram are required.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia in our SurgiCenter in Durango with no overnight stay, complete confidentiality, and with considerable cost savings vs. hospitalization. The surgery will take approximately 4 or 5 hours. The incision is usually "anchor-shaped"; it circles the areola, extends down the front of the breast vertically, and sometimes horizontally under the breast where it meets the chest.

You'll be wrapped in an elastic bandage and will have drains for the first day or two. Then you'll wear a surgical bra, day and night, for several weeks. You'll feel pain for the first few days, but this can be controlled with medication. Dr. Winder will give you specific instructions regarding resuming your normal activities, depending on your particular rate of recovery.
