SCLEROTHERAPY

If you're considering treatment for spider veins....

If you have spider veins (little "clusters" of tiny web-patterned veins) on your legs and ankles that you find undesirable, you may want to consider sclerotherapy. This is a method where any spider vein large enough to insert a tiny needle may be treated by injecting "sclerosing solution". We find this to be a preferred injectable over saline solution, which is also commonly used; saline solution can cause a burning sensation during the injection, it can cause pigmentary changes at the injection site(s) and can cause ulcers to the skin. Although you can still get a skin ulcer with a sclerosing solution, it is less likely. Some vericose veins can also be treated with this method.

It is important to note, however, that there are no guarantees with sclerotherapy; conservatively, we estimate that this is successful 60-75% of the time. The best candidates for this procedure are people who are healthy and understand the potential for success.

You'll meet with Dr. Winder and his patient counselor to go over all the information and details you will need to know to make a fully informed and educated decision about this procedure.

This procedure is performed with no anesthetic (injecting anesthetic "distorts" the veins); but, all you'll feel is a little needle poke. As soon as Dr. Winder has injected a vein, one of our nurses will be directly behind him applying pressure to keep the vein blood-free. Upon completion, the area(s) injected will be wrapped with Ace bandages to provide additional compression.

You may drive yourself home when finished. You'll be asked to continue to wear the Ace bandages for about a week - this is very important. You may have some bruising; however, this usually doesn't look any worse than the veins did before treatment. The day of your procedure you may want to bring some gum, breath mints or mouthwash, as it can cause a &qveot;soapy" taste in your mouth.
